Jikiden Reiki
The authentic Japanese teachings
by Natalie Manderson

Reiki is a non-religious hands-on healing technique founded by Mr Mikao Usui in 19th Century Japan. A practitioner re-awakens the natural healing process within the recipient to improve their physical and psychological health.

Reiki existing in the West today was proliferated by the teachings of Hawayo Takata a Japanese American from Hawaii. Reiki was dramatically transformed when it was introduced to Western countries.

Jikiden Reiki (Jikiden means directly passed down/traditional) is the original Japanese reiki that started in Japan and offers the original teachings which were lost when it travelled to the West. Jikiden Reiki includes techniques and methods as taught by Dr. Chujiro Hayashi in 1938 but not taught in Reiki that is popular in the West today.

Jikiden Reiki promotes the effectiveness of reiki in treating illnesses, unlike Western style reiki that focuses more on the relaxation benefits.

Brief history of Jikiden reiki

After speaking to Western Reiki masters who were in Japan, Chiyoko Yamaguche (a student of Dr. Hayashi) and her son Tadao Yamaguchi realised that reiki has been changed from the way she had learned it in 1938. In 2000 they founded the Jikiden Reiki Institute in Japan to preserve the original ideas, methods and teachings of the Usui Reiki system.

Tadao Yamaguchi’s experience of the original Japanese Reiki system spans over 40 years.  He was taught and raised with reiki by his mother Chiyoko Yamaguchi.

Chiyoko Yamaguchi learned Reiki in 1938 when she was 17 years old from Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, one of the original 20 students of Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki. By the time of her death in 2003 she had over 65 years of knowledge and experience. Her mission was to teach the original reiki teachings as she remembered learning in Dr. Hayashi’s classes.

My discovery of Jikiden Reiki

I am a holistic therapist and was a practitioner of Western style Reiki for four years before discovering Jikiden Reiki in 2005. After receiving just one treatment I noticed the difference immediately and was then determined to learn with Tadao Yamaguchi and became a Jikiden Reiki practitioner. In his workshops there were new credible concepts and methods that I had not learned in my first reiki training four years earlier. Now I feel I have a greater understanding about Reiki.

After personally experiencing the powerful effects of Jikiden reiki and receiving great feedback from my family and my clients I decided to become a Shihan-kaku (an assistant teacher) to educate and pass on the original reiki teachings to others. I am very excited about the benefits Jikiden reiki healing has to offer to so many people.
